Aloha everyone,

The Senate has finally released its super-secretBetter Care Reconciliation Act.” If you want to learn more about it, you can link to the long explanation, the medium explanation, or just read the short explanation: “the Senate health bill slashes Medicaid to finance a tax cut for the rich.”

Mitch McConnell wants to hold a final vote one week from today, before Congress goes on its July 4 recess. He’s worried that when GOP senators go home and face their constituents, they’ll realize just how badly a vote for this bill will hurt their chances for re-election. (And some of them might even feel a tinge of guilt once they actually meet a few people who could die because of it.)

Fortunately, Indivisible has come up with a pretty clever plan to “Filibuster by Amendment,” the rest is from them:

Republicans are using a special process called “reconciliation” to jam through TrumpCare. This means they only need 50 votes, instead of the usual 60, to pass it. But the trade-off is that they have to allow an unlimited number of amendments. Any Senator can file as many amendments as they want and then call them up for a vote on the Senate floor during a period called “vote-a-rama.” Democratic Senators can and should plan thousands of amendments and keep them going until Republicans agree to have public hearings on the bill. By introducing tens of thousands of amendments, Democrats can slow down the process enough to draw necessary attention to Senate Republicans’ secret process and the disastrous impacts of their TrumpCare bill.

Action 1.
Submit your amendment to help slow down this bill. Your amendment, if passed, will specifically exempt you from the destructive provisions of the Senate Bill. You can read it here. We’re basically asking our senators to save their constituents, one by one.
1a. Go to Indivisible’s
1b. Enter your name and contact information in the amendment form. You can also add your own story to be submitted as part of the Congressional Record.
1c. When you hit submit, a copy of the amendment text with your information will be delivered to the health care staffer for your two Senators. You will also receive a copy.
1d. Once you’ve received a copy of your personalized amendment, forward it to our contacts in Brian and Mazie’s offices. Tell them that you are part of Kauai Indivisible, and ask that Brian and Mazie introduce it and submit your comments during consideration of the bill.Subject Line: TrumpCare Amendment

Action 2.
Help convince 3 Republicans to vote against McConnellcare. (Running this back from last week, now more urgent than ever). Indivisible has created an action plan focusing on 11 GOP senators in 10 states who are most likely to vote against the bill. We’ve used it to create this multi-part action.
2a. Visit and scroll down to the list of ten states Indivisible is targeting.
2b. Make a list of your friends and family members who are registered to vote in any of those states. (There is a handy “find your Facebook Friends in this state” link on the site.)
2c. Email or message those friends with a link to Indivisible’s guide to their state, and ask them to contact their senator and relevant staff members.Message Template (the more you personalize it, the better):

I’m reaching out to you because Senator X is a swing vote on the Senate’s bill to repeal Obamacare and replace it with a huge tax cut for the wealthy. 13 Senators are writing the bill in total secrecy, and they are planning to hold a vote by July 4! If it is anything like the House’s, this bill will take away health care from millions of Americans, cut Medicaid, increase premiums, and allow states to get rid of protections for people with pre-existing conditions. Here’s a link to information about how AHCA will affect X STATE, with statistics and suggestions for how to contact your senator and what to tell them: [Insert State Specific Link]. Thanks for taking the time to do this.

As always…
